“For we know there’s no other like our Sisterhood…Alpha Kappa Alpha…”

As Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated celebrates its 100th anniversary this year, we reflect on our distinguished past and look forward to a future where we can continue to positively impact our community, our country, and our world. We can not rest on what we have achieved, for as long as there are people in need, social injustices, low minority enrollment in higher education, inequities in economic opportunities, and a lack of health awareness that affects our livelihood, Alpha Kappa Alpha will continue to mobilize and address these concerns.

On January 15, 2008 I had the privilege of making a memorable pilgrimage. I returned to the roots of Alpha Kappa Alpha and stood on the campus of Howard University where nine women laid the foundation of service and sisterhood upon which we all stand.

The journey “home” was an experience of a lifetime and one I will never forget. I actually had the privilege to stand where Founder Ethel Hedgeman Lyle shared her vision with eight exceptional college women. I actually had the privilege to walk in the footsteps of our beloved Founders. Thus, visiting the birthplace of Alpha Kappa Alpha reenergized me and I have rededicated myself to this great sorority and will continue to serve all mankind.

Let us remember the importance of serving our communities in Gwinnett County and the State of Georgia. Whether or not you are a member of a Greek-letter organization, you can make a difference in improving the quality of life in your community with volunteerism.

Upsilon Alpha Omega chapter, serving the Gwinnett County community since 1994, actively implements the Four Platforms for graduate chapters of the International Extraordinary Service Program (ESP) of Alpha Kappa Alpha:

Platform I – The Non-Traditional Entrepreneur: to build a strong foundation for women and minorities in business

Platform II – The Economic Keys to Success: through Education, Synergy and Partnerships

Platform III – The Economic Growth of the Black Family: through activities that Enable, Support and Provide access

Platform IV – Economic Educational Advancement Through Technology: signature program for the Undergraduate chapters of AKA.

Platform V – Health Resource Management and Economics: to address the many mental and physical health issues and crises that face our community
